women's group travel - women's adventure tour

What is a Women’s Adventure?

We’re not looking at the world through bus windows — we’re squishing it between our toes.

I created these small-group trips for women (and femme-identifying nonbinary folk) who like to experience life in faraway places, get to know local people, and delve deep into the culture.

Nothing wrong with resorts and four-star hotels — but that’s not this trip. My women-only travel groups are a little rough around the edges.

Our water isn’t always hot, and our towels and pillows might not be fluffy sometimes, but we love being as immersed as possible in the local way of life. And the money we save on fancy lodging lets us dive into more activities and adventures!

Meeting the other cool chicks who love to travel this way is half the fun!

Exploring Spain by Train

For this trip, we’ll meet in Madrid (which is usually the most affordable city in Spain to fly into) and I’ll return you to Madrid at the end of the journey to catch your flight home.

We’ll travel by train across the Moorish-influenced region of southern Spain, with stops in Seville and Cordoba on our way to our main destination — Granada.

Stroll through the manicured gardens of the Alhambra palace, relax in the pools of a splendid hammam, and witness the living, breathing Moorish culture of the Albaicín neighborhood.

We’ll visit streets lined with tapas bars, take in the sumptuous Granada Cathedral, sip sangria at a live Flamenco performance, and hike between the White Villages of Las Alpujarras in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Click on each day below to see photos & details of what we’ll do on this trip.

Day 1: Arrivals in Madrid

This day is set aside for arrivals, although I encourage you to arrive a few days early and explore Madrid at your leisure!

We’ll meet for tapas after everyone has arrived, get to know each other, and go over our itinerary.

Day 2: Seville

In the morning, we’ll take an early train to Seville and drop our luggage at our lodging. Then we’ll spend the day exploring this beautiful city either on foot or from a doubledecker “hop on, hop off” bus. Either way, we’ll see the great plazas, the bullring, the river, and so much more.
We’ll also allow some downtime for shopping, nibbling tapas, and watching street entertainers. We’ll spend the night in Seville.

Day 3: Córdoba

Today we take the train to Granada, but we’ll stop for a couple of hours in the majestic and magical city of Córdoba on the way. Córdoba has been a Roman settlement, part of the Visigoth kingdom, and a Muslim city during Moorish reign.

We’ll walk across the river on a stunning, ancient Roman bridge built 20 centuries ago by Emperor Augustus, wander narrow streets, and take time for shopping, photographs, and nibbles.

After a leisurely top in Cordoba, we’ll get back on the train and make our way to Granada. In the evening, we’ll see a professional Flamenco show with live music.

Day 4: Walking Tour & Hammam

We’ll learn more about Granada by walking the streets, especially in the historic areas of town. We’ll visit the Cathedral, see some of the city’s beautiful plazas, and nibble a variety of tapas for our dinner.

We’ll spend our afternoon soaking in the luxurious pools of the Hammam (baths are included; you can choose to add a massage or body scrub at your own expense). This is a mixed-gender hammam — everyone wears a bathing suit.

Day 5: Alhambra and Albaicín

We’ll enjoy a guided tour of the rambling gardens and 9th-century Moorish architecture of the Alhambra palace, widely considered the most important remnant of Islamic rule in Spain. On our way home, we’ll stroll through the Albyaicín neighborhood, a romantic maze of narrow streets filled with Moroccan-style shops. We’ll try some authentic Moroccan food for dinner.

Day 6: Hiking in the Sierra Nevada
Hiking among the White Villages

To really get a feel for Spanish life, we’ll need to leave the city and see what the mountain villages are like. We’ll take a public bus into the Alpujarras, or “white villages” in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Here we can stroll from one village to the next, have lunch in an outdoor cafe, and enjoy breathtaking views.

Day 6: Hammam and Flamenco

A brief flamenco class will give us an insider view of the passionate art and music that flourish in this region. We’ll spend our afternoon soaking in the luxurious pools

Day 7: Departures/Free Day

This is departure day for anyone who isn’t staying for the Morocco add-on. For everyone else, it’s a free day to explore, shop, or schedule your own activities.

If you’re departing, I’ll organize your transportation back to Madrid to catch your return flight. If you’re continuing on the extension, your lodging in Granada is included.

5d/4n Overland Morocco Extension

If you choose to stay for the Morocco extension, you’re in for a remarkable adventure. We’ll be traveling by land and sea, and getting intimately acquainted with some of the best of Moroccan culture.

Morocco Extension Itinerary
Day 1: Travel to Tangier

On this travel day, we’ll see lots of Spanish landscapes. We’ll take either a train or bus from Granada to the town of Algeciras on the southern coast (about 4 hours) and then a ferry across the Straits of Gibraltar. You’ll see Africa rising up from the horizon as we approach Tangier, where we’ll spend the night.

If it’s at all possible, I hope we can stay at the historic Continental Hotel, where Winston Churchill used to paint on the sun deck. The rooms are a bit musty, to be honest, but with a faded grandeur that more than makes up for the aging facilities!

Day 2: Kasbah & travel to Chefchaouen

We’ll visit the Kasbah of Tangier in the morning, and then you’ll enjoy views of the Moroccan countryside as we ride in a modern, comfortable bus to the famous Blue City of Chefchaouen. By evening you’ll be having dinner in the plaza, surrounded by the haunting Call to Prayer of the many mosques.

Day 3: Explore Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is a small town, easy to navigate on foot. You’ll have the day to explore, relax, shop, eat, photograph, and enjoy this peaceful, tourist-friendly little village.

Day 4: Hiking in the Rif mountains

We’ll go by taxi to a trailhead in Talassemtane National Park. Depending on the fitness level and interest of the group, we’ll either hike to a waterfall or to a spectacular land bridge. After our hike, we’ll have free time to explore the village.

Day 5: Return to Madrid

After breakfast on the final day, we’ll make our way back to Madrid. Mostly likely, this will mean returning by bus to Tangier and then catching a flight.

I recommend either booking a late-night flight home OR planning to spend an extra night or two in Madrid.

If you want to go on to explore Barcelona or some other city, let me know. We may be able to fly you there directly from Tangiers and apply a credit for your unused ticket to Madrid.

Your Host

Hi, I’m Lauren Haas, the founder of Indie Travel Guru.

In May of 2013, I sold everything I owned and started traveling the world with all my possessions in a backpack. It’s been an incredible journey, and now I’m beginning to share the world with small groups of women who want to see it the way I do.

I love to walk, hike, take local transportation, get involved in local life, and learn about cultures from the inside out, through arts, food, music, dance, and culture. Come join me for an unforgettable adventure!
